This matters because of who OpenAI is to Nvidia. It has been one of Nvidia’s most valuable customers. Nvidia has invested tens of billions of dollars in it. In August, Nvidia agreed to provide more than $100 billion in credit support for an OpenAI data center project in Ohio, built entirely on Nvidia’s chips. And Jensen Huang wrote at the time that OpenAI had committed to spending roughly $600 billion on Nvidia servers through 2030.
Back in June of last year, I borrowed a line from Star Wars to describe Google’s TPU chips landing OpenAI as a customer: a ‘disturbance in the Force’. As I put it then in RTZ 766, it didn’t change Nvidia’s dominant position, but it did establish ‘a solid, and distant number two’.
Sixteen months later, the disturbance is getting louder. In two days this week, OpenAI said it plans to buy Google’s TPUs, Oracle became the first major cloud outside Google to offer them, and Anthropic’s S-1 showed roughly $400 billion of its compute commitments tied to them.
The Information calls it a ‘TPU moment’ for Google, in ‘Google is Having a TPU Moment’. It’s the right frame.
